If you do a sporting activity, like running, going to the gym, cycling etc, consider the 7-4-2 rule, which says:
"In a 7-day week, don't do your sporting activity more than 4 times and no more than 2 days in a row."
Many sporting injuries occur due to fatigue so it's important to slow down and listen to your body when you're tired and consider following a recognised training programme.
If you get an injury, give yourself enough chance to rest and recover and don't be in a hurry to start back too soon. Your body takes longer to repair the older you are, so where five years ago you may have rested for two weeks, you may now have to rest for two months.
When you're training, think of the Goldilocks story. You want to train enough to strengthen your muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons, but not so much that you end up putting too much stress on them. It's called the Zone of Optimal Stress and there's a whole load of science around it!!
Studies show that many injuries are caused following a two-week summer or Christmas break. You lose most of your cardio-vascular training in two weeks and you lose 25% of your muscle strength and endurance in three weeks. This means that if you resume your training schedule at the level you were working before you went on holiday, you may increase your risk of injury.
Pilates exercises may help if you're regularly getting injured or having to manage with ongoing pain.
