ALL ABOUT PILATES FOR CYCLISTS

Companies like Halfords have seen their sales explode as people move away from public transport for their daily commute particularly as we are looking for greener alternatives to travel.

If you're somebody who spends hours on your bike on a weekend or 20 minutes every day you may find that Pilates will really help.

Your body position on the bike can be very rounded and may cause pain in the upper back.  You will definitely benefit from a strong core and stability in the pelvis and lower back while also focusing on hip mobility.  If you are someone who just relies on cycling for your exercise, you will be missing out on any load-bearing exercises such as the plank.  You would also benefit from abduction and adduction exercises where you move the arms and legs out to side rather than just forward and back all the time.  Make sure you include some back extension exercises like diamond press or Cobra into your weekly routine to improve your posture when you're off the bike.

It's definitely worth including a Pilates session into your weekly schedule to help to improve your cycling performance.  In the meantime, keep cycling !!
