ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM BACK PAIN?

I was one of those statistics suffering from lower back pain for as long as I can remember.  Sometimes, I would have to be prised out of a car after a long journey, stack my work chair with cushions to give me some comfort and standing for long periods was completely out of the question.  The straw that broke the camel’s back was moving a piano (don’t ask!) and I couldn’t get out of bed for a week.  My only mode of transport was a walking stick!!   I came to the conclusion that something in my life had to change and that's when I discovered Pilates.  Not only has it enabled me to be pain-free, but it has also given me a whole new career.   Pilates is effective because it focuses on the smaller muscle groups or stabilisers which hold you upright.  Gym exercises and activities like running which build the larger muscle groups, like the quads and glutes are good, but if your posture is poor, your back pain won’t go away.   If my story sounds familiar there are many options available, for example, the NHS website is a good place to start. Aches and pains are your body’s way of telling you something is wrong, so don’t ignore them.   You only have one body so look after it and it will serve you well. Next time, I will discuss why good posture is so important for you.
