ALL ABOUT WHY MEN SHOULD DO PILATES

Pilates exercises were created by a man (Joseph) specifically for men as he originally worked with injured military personnel as well as athletes, wrestlers, skiers and boxers. Joseph had been a boxer and a circus artist so it was a very male-dominated exercise programme.

However, over the years Pilates has become more synonymous with female participation.  There are a range of reasons, but none that stand up to rigorous analysis.

Whatever your gender, practising Pilates will give you a strong, lean and less fatigued body without some of the negative effects of more vigorous exercise activities. It also complements and adds value to other sporting activities such as skiing, golf or running.  The proof is in the pudding.  A study of professional male golfers demonstrated the benefits of regular Pilates instruction on the distance off the tee.

Other famous male Pilates advocates include Andy Murray, David Beckham, Hugh Grant and Harry Styles.

A recent article in The Times about male fitness suggested that all men over 40 should stretch for at least 10 minutes every day (with no excuse!) and exercise even when you don’t feel like it – it will give you such a sense of achievement.

If you put in the effort today you will reap the benefits tomorrow.
