ALL ABOUT THE PERIMENOPAUSE

Dame Kelly Holmes was recently quoted in The Times as saying ‘Perimenopause is killing me’ as she complained about lethargy, brain fog, night sweats and joint aches.    Perimenopause typically lasts about four years occurring between the ages of 45 and 55 and can lead to weight gain and muscle loss.   However, Holmes declared she had found her secret weapon – weight training.   Weight training is far better at minimising body fat than a run as it keeps the metabolism going for longer.  In fact, research has shown that weights can offset some of the side effects of the perimenopause as it helps to change the ratio of body fat to lean muscle which is associated with fewer ‘vasomotor’ symptoms such as hot flushes.   Lifting heavier weights and using Pilates bands are recommended to maintain bone health and reduce muscle loss.  Weights can also prevent the increase of fat which settles around the belly.   An exercise programme like Pilates is excellent as it involves moving lots of large and different muscle groups causing the body to burn energy more efficiently.   I am attending a Pilates for Menopause workshop in June and I look forward to sharing what I learn with you.
