ALL ABOUT STABILISER MUSCLES

One way of considering muscles is to think of them as having two distinct and complementary functions – muscles that act as movers and muscles that act as stabilisers.

ALL ABOUT STABILISER MUSCLES

Last week I attended a Pilates masterclass which looked at this concept and developed the idea of using de-stabilising exercises to stress and develop these deep intrinsic stabilising muscles.

As the name suggests, mover muscles (like the quads, biceps and pecs) are responsible for helping us move parts of our bodies or whole bodies from one point to another. Stabiliser muscles, on the other hand, are responsible for holding the body upright and maintaining control while moving or holding still.

Stabiliser muscles play a key role in balance and coordination by providing support and stability to the body during various activities. They are also essential for maintaining proper posture and performing everyday tasks such as walking, lifting and reaching.

Stabiliser muscles help stabilise the joints, protecting them from excessive stress and reducing the risk of joint injuries and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. This is particularly important for older adults and individuals with joint-related issues or previous injuries. As we age maintaining strong stabiliser muscles will optimise joint function and prevent degenerative issues. By improving stability, balance, and coordination, you will be able to perform daily tasks and activities without assistance for as long as possible.

In general, a gym workout will only target the large prime mover muscle groups, whereas a Pilates class will also work on the smaller stabilising groups building strength and flexibility.  A combination of both will give you the best of both worlds!
