ALL ABOUT PILATES AND TENNIS

8th July 2024
At this time of the year, I stay out of the sun (and the rain) to spend my spare time watching tennis.  I don’t or can’t play, but I love watching the athleticism of the players at the top of their game.

ALL ABOUT PILATES AND TENNIS

Tennis involves movement in all directions, balancing, jumping, spinning, stopping suddenly and getting up from the floor if you’ve fallen over.

You often see players like Andy Murray and Serena Williams warming up before their matches doing exercises based on Pilates.

Athleticism in tennis requires dynamic rotation and extension of the spine, so mobility and strength are key.  Many movements are done when reaching for the ball when players are likely off-balance, so core strengthening exercises and balance are essential.  Hip and knee flexion are important to reach the drop-shots and shoulder mobility will help with your serve and the higher lob shots.

Exercises to help your game include “thread the needle”, the bridge using a band, side bends in mermaid and arm openings on your side.

Whether you’re hitting a few balls at your local park or playing professionally, Pilates can have a positive effect on your game.
