OA is strongly associated with ageing causing pain and stiffness of the joints, most commonly in the hip and knee. It can also be caused by trauma and repetitive stress from certain occupations and sporting activities. Individuals who are overweight and with poor posture have an increased risk of the condition.
Exercises, like the ones we do in Pilates, which increase mobility have been proven to be effective in slowing the progression of OA and improving symptoms so people can stay active for longer.
OA should not be confused with RA which is a chronic multi-system inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and deformity of the joints. The cause of RA is unknown, but factors such as genetics, infection, lifestyle, hormones, environmental and immunologic factors may play a significant role.
Treatments for RA include hydrotherapy, diet, pharmacological and surgical interventions. People with Rheumatoid Arthritis are also recommended to choose low-impact exercises such as Pilates providing that the joints are not painful and inflamed.
Further information on the diagnosis and treatment of both conditions can be found on the NHS website.
