ALL ABOUT OSTEOARTHRITIS

Although there is no cure for osteoarthritis, new draft guidelines from the NHS advise that exercise should be a ‘core treatment’ to maintain mobility and limit the progression of the disease.   Strong pain killers are not recommended because there is little evidence to support their use and in the case of strong opioids, there is evidence that they can cause more harm.   Commenting on the recent study, Dr Wendy Holden said: "Many people wrongly believe that exercise can harm their joints, so this new guidance is very important.  It will empower patients and give them the confidence to make healthy lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life." The current surgery backlog means that patients are waiting months for treatment.  NICE (The National Institute for Clinical Excellence) says a joint replacement may be the right option when the disease has progressed, but losing weight by following a healthy diet and exercising will reduce strain on the joints and will delay the inevitability of needing a joint replacement. The types of exercise that are recommended include low-impact activities such as walking, cycling and swimming.  Exercises that strengthen muscles, maintain flexibility and include gentle stretching such as Pilates will improve overall balance and mobility.   If you are suffering from osteoarthritis, take a look at the NHS website for further guidance - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/osteoarthritis/.
