As we age, we tend to slow down and move less. The less we move, the stiffer our joints become, our muscles lose strength and our bones weaken. The more our joints ache, the less we move leading to a downward spiral of inactivity.
There are many things that we do in our daily lives to stay active such as cleaning, carrying shopping or gardening. Pilates exercises are designed to help you to keep doing these activities and stay independent for as long as you can.
Here are some examples of the exercises we do in class and how they relate to your everyday life:
Tricep dips – getting out of the bath
Bicep curls – carrying heavy shopping
Lunges – picking something up from the floor
Heel lifts – reaching for a high object
Crouch – unloading the washing machine
Flexing + rotating the spine – hoovering
Squats – climbing stairs and getting out of a chair/off the toilet
Spinal rotation – putting on your seatbelt
Lifting weights – ironing
Oyster – getting in/out of a car
Balance exercises – avoiding falls
4 point kneeling exercises – strengthening the wrists
