ALL ABOUT ISOMETRIC EXERCISE

There are three types of muscle contractions – concentric, eccentric and isometric.   Concentric contraction is when the muscle shortens, eccentric when the muscle lengthens and isometric, when the muscle maintains tension.  Examples of isometric exercises are the plank and wall squats which were identified in the podcast as key blood pressure modulators.  Isometric exercises may be helpful to someone who has an injury as they can build and maintain strength when movement is painful.  Isometric training may also be effective for someone who has osteoarthritis as the exercises can improve muscle strength and physical function without incurring the pain associated with movement.

I have been doing a range of isometric exercises in my recent classes.  The key is to start slowly and build your strength and you will be amazed at the results!
